Large Punic Funerary Stele Dating From Between 100 Bc And 300 Ad
Figured funerary stele - North Africa (Tunisia) Period: Late Punic period / Roman Africa Dating: c. 1st century BC - 3rd century AD Material: carved limestone Height: approx. 70 cm Origin: Tunisia Description Funerary stele in carved limestone featuring an arched niche housing a stylized human figure, surmounted by two facing birds with outstretched wings. The simple and hieratic composition is in keeping with the tradition of popular funerary stelae of ancient Africa, where the niche evokes a sacred space or a small sanctuary. The central figure likely represents the deceased or a protective presence. The upper register features two symmetrical birds, probably doves, a recurring motif in ancient North African funerary iconography and associated with the soul of the deceased or the passage to the afterlife. The reverse is uncarved, characteristic of stelae intended to be placed against a wall or partially buried. Condition: Ancient wear and erosion, softened relief, natural deposits and alterations consistent with prolonged outdoor exposure. Provenance: Former private collection, Brussels, already in the family in the 19th century. *Better photos coming soon. This is a very rare museum piece that exudes an atmosphere that seems to be that of the soul of the deceased. **Could you tell me more about the piece?
