Artist: Leopold Van Esbroeck, known as (Pol), 1911–2010, Belgian sculptor. Title: Spel in Zand en Zee (Game in the Sand and Sea). Medium: Lebanese cedar wood. Signature: Incised cursive signature (see photo). Condition: Very good, no missing pieces. Dimensions: Monumental sculpture, 87 cm high, 140 cm long, 90 cm deep. Provenance: Galerie Nova Mechelen, 1965. Biography: Description: Leopold "Pol" studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and won several prizes. After his studies, he became a professor at the Antwerp Academy, the youngest ever. During the war years, Leopold Van Esbroeck was responsible for the restoration of the Rubens House in Antwerp, and from 1964 to 1969, he restored the Calvary statues near the church. Saint Paul of Antwerp. Leopold was married to the Flemish sculptor Mariëtte Coppens. Together, they sculpted the "Linden Tree" of Zoersel. He sculpted several war monuments, a large number of busts, designed tanks, and painted. His working style evolved from Baroque to austere. Leopold and Mariëtte are buried in the artists' cemetery at Schoonselhof in Antwerp. In 2011, daughters Mieke and Diana (Coppens) opened the Van Esbroeck-Coppens Sculpture House, a museum in Zoersel dedicated to their parents' works.
