Punjab, India, Late 19th Century, Hoshiarpur Folding Screen (wood And Bone)

Rare wedding screen originating from Punjab, colonial period, circa 1880-1900. It has four panels, each measuring 176 cm x 63 cm x 4 cm, for a total length of 176 cm x 252 cm. The back bears the maker's label from Hoshiarpur (see photo). Hoshiarpur was founded, according to tradition, during the first part of the 4th century. In 1809, it was occupied by the forces of Maharaja Karanvir Singh and incorporated into the state of Punjab. The screen is in very good condition, with refined bone inlay in Indian designs on exotic wood. It is very heavy. Provenance: former Destoup diplomatic collection.
