CAHN collection, provenance 'Cahn Auction 7 sale 3/11/2012 (head of a young Roman woman in marble circa 200 AD) * We have the following documents which respect the legislation on antiquities 'The Art Loss Register' and Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale Ufficio Comando - Sezione Elaborazione Dati Nr. 23/918-44 di prot. OGGETTO: This photo accreditation of a female test of and to antonina (Rif. BD CCTPC 81423-5) Roma, September 25, 2012. Description: 309 PRIVATE PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN FROM THE ANTONINE PERIOD CHE 36000 H. 33 cm. Marble. Roman, 2nd quarter of the 3rd century AD. 29060 The head of the young woman, set within a medallion, was part of a bust and was turned slightly to the right. Broad upper eyelids, beneath flat, thin brow ridges, cover almond-shaped eyes with incised irises; the pupils are pierced, and the gaze is directed upwards. Her hair, parted in the middle, falls almost linearly across her forehead and is folded upwards and over her skull in well-defined, wavy tufts, forming a braided chignon at the back of her head. The expression is youthful, gentle, yet firm. The eyes show traces of red paint; an original surface polish has been preserved. The formal design of the eyes and hairstyle is typical of the late Hadrianic or early Antonine period, dating to the second quarter of the 2nd century AD. The trend towards more elaborate hairstyles worn by empresses of this period, such as Empress Faustina, wife of Antoninus Pius, is a key feature of official imperial portraits and, for the sake of imitation, was also adopted for the design of private portraits. 19th-century restorations: the forehead, nose, mouth, and chin have been added; both ears are missing and have been inserted separately. Provenance: 19th-century restoration. Formerly in private possession. ** We remain at your disposal for any questions you may have. It is on display at the 'Sablon Antiques Center' Gallery, 39 Place du Grand Sablon, 1000 Brussels.*** l acheteur en 2012 chez Cahn Auction , etait un grand notaire de Bruxelles
