Walter Pompe ( 1703 - 1777 ) Bozzeti - For A Calvary ( Mary And Saint - John ) Terracotta
Artist: Walter Pompe 1703 - 1777
Artist: although the style of his 'Bozzeti' and the red color of the terracotta bring to mind a talented Italian sculptor of the quality of Giuseppe Sanmartino my research and the provenance of the collection of a Brussels Jesuit lead me to the Dutch sculptor by the name of Walter Pompe ( 1703 - 1777 ) Walter Pompe (1703-1777) was a major Flemish Baroque sculptor, mainly active in Antwerp. He is famous for the finesse of his religious sculptures, working with great precision in wood, terracotta and ivory his style is deeply marked by the Italianizing current, inherited directly from his master Michiel van der Voort the Elder (who, himself, had traveled to Rome)
