“The Annunciation”

Date: 17th–18th centuries
Contemporary gilded wooden frame, molded and decorated in relief
Technique: Oil on canvas on a stretcher
Canvas: 127.5 x 100.5 cm
Frame: 160 x 120 cm

The painting depicts the Gospel scene of the Annunciation, when the archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary the conception of Christ.
On the left, the announcing angel, depicted with outstretched wings and a flowing robe, is shown descending. The gesture of his raised hand signifies the act of divine revelation.
On the right is the Virgin Mary, depicted in a contemplative and pensive pose, with her gaze lowered and her hand on her chest, symbolizing acceptance and humility.
Mary is placed next to a lectern with an open book, a clear reference to the Holy Scriptures and spiritual meditation.
Above the figures, a dove descends from above, symbolizing the divine presence and the Holy Spirit.
Good state of preservation with widespread craquelure on the painted surface, consistent with the work’s age
