Julius Lange (german, 1817-1878) Village Scene With Peasants And Church In Background

Artist: Julius Lange
This scene of village life was painted in 1873 by the renowned Düsseldorf School painter Julius Ludwig Christian Lange (1817 Darmstadt - 1878 Munich).

At the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, Lange was a pupil of the painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer from 1836 to 1839. Larger commissions brought him financial success: the Venice Academy of Fine Arts commissioned a series of sketches for the study of landscape painting;

the Milan Academy commissioned two larger canvases. During his stay in northern Italy, Lange was also able to establish contacts with the Milanese court. Until 1858, he was artistic tutor to Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium, the future Empress of Mexico.

At the end of 1858, Lange returned to Munich. Here, too, he was admitted to court. King Maximilian of Bavaria took a liking to him, and Munich society soon took notice. His son, King Ludwig II, also acquired two landscapes for the Neue Pinakothek. For Ludwig II, Lange produced a number of watercolors and gouaches - in connection with the Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof palace construction projects - mainly views of French palaces, but also interior designs for the king's palaces. Lange's pupils included Karl Millner and Carl Bolze. In 1860, Lange, along with his teacher Schirmer, Carl Friedrich Lessing, Christian Morgenstern, Carl Schweich and Karl Ludwig Seeger, contributed to the book *Die große deutsche Landschaftsschule* (The Great German Landscape School), which featured photographs by Georg Markwort of original studies by these landscape artists.
