A pair of allegorical paintings: "Flora completed the flowers of the painter Varelst" and "Venus reprimands Ganymede, who defeated Amor at craps"
This pair of masterfully circular oil-in-gray paintings was created around 1780-s. Both scenes date back to two poems by the English poet Matthew Prior (1664 Middlesex - 1721). The subject, style and composition of these paintings absolutely correspond to all the stylistic criteria of the works of the famous Austro-Swiss neo-classical allegorical artist and portraitist Angelica Kauffmann (1741 - 1807). These paintings have been confirmed by experts from the renowned Austrian gallery Hassfurther in Vienna as authentic works by Angelica Kauffmann (a copy of the estimate will be attached to the paintings). We found copperplate engravings after these paintings, published by the engraver Thomas Burke in 1784. It was further stated that Kauffmann had created several similar circular gray paintings in 1780 (see additional photos of "Retrospective. Angelica Kauffmann", Exhibition Catalogue, Düsseldorf-Munich-Chur, 1998-1999, Edition Gerd Hatje, 1999).
