The antique colored terracotta figure of an African American, resting on a bench with a newspaper and cigar, was executed by Bernard Bloch (died 1815) at his ceramic manufactory in Eichwald, Bohemia, in 1880s.
Bernhard Bloch of Eichwald, owner of the Bernhard Bloch Company, in Eichwald in Bohemia (today the town of Dubi, Czech Republic), was a leading producer of terracottas and figurative ceramics, and his beautiful works are still prized by collectors today.
Inscription: signed with the BB monogram and model number 4873 on the back of the base
