High-quality miniature depicting a young woman (on the reverse, an old inscription mentions the model’s name: Maria Kastelli), painted around 1830 by the famous Austrian portraitist and miniaturist Franz Schrotzberg.
Franz Schrotzberg (1814 Vienna – 1889 Graz) was a student at the Vienna Academy. Beginning in 1832, he exhibited his oil portraits and miniatures at academic exhibitions, quickly gaining great popularity among royalty and high society, both in Austria and abroad (particularly for his portraits of women). His works are held at the Austrian National Gallery at the Belvedere and in other prestigious museums in Austria and abroad.
