Portrait Of A Nobleman By Franz Eybl (austrian, 1806-1888), Attributed To
Artist: Franz Eybl, Attribué à
This portrait of a gentleman was executed around 1830-1840, in a style and quality very close to those of the renowned Viennese portraitist Franz Eybl (1806-1887).
Franz Eybl was an Austrian painter and lithographer born in Vienna in 1806. He was one of the greatest masters of genre painting and a highly regarded portraitist in Viennese circles. Entering the Vienna Academy in 1816 at the age of 10, he studied under Josef Moessmer, J.B. von Lampi, F. Caucig, and Peter Krafft. Gifted with a talent for depicting nature and light, he broke free from classicism to create a vibrant and personal style of genre painting. His talent also led him to portraiture. Eybl began with small-format portraits of great finesse, becoming one of the masters of miniature portraiture at its height in Austria. His genre paintings, meanwhile, aroused considerable interest and earned him great renown at the exhibitions of the Austrian Art Association (Kunstverein) in the 1830s. Simultaneously, his reputation as a portraitist and lithographer continued to grow until the end of his career in the 1860s.
