Pasticchio ' Mater Dolorosa ' XVI Es - XVII Es Panel
Country: Italy or German-speaking countries , Germany , Austria , Hungary
Subject: devotional work that was taken on journeys to pray at ports of call
Date: difficult to specify at the moment because under a yellowish varnish there seems to be a fine network of cracks - as a precaution I would say around 1610 - 1640
Substrate: oil or tempera on poplar panel it seems (see photo) the edges are beveled as on an icon
Inspiration: this face of "Mater Dolorosa" holds a quiet strength the painter has included in his material a part of his devotion the style is reminiscent of "El Greco" the very elongated face but also the Germanic virgins of the sixteenth, I remain dubious about its origin?
Provenance: acquired from a Belgian noble family from Brabant Wallon
Dimensions: 17 cm x 22 cm
* Available at ' Sablon Antiques Center ' 39 , Place du Grand Sablon , 1000 Bruxelles
