Provenance: Alcácer do Sal, Portugal
Period: 12th century
Dimensions: 23 cm (H) x 15 cm (W) x 6 cm (D)

An exceptional example of a 12th-century inscribed stone, likely a fragment of a funerary monument, discovered in Alcácer do Sal, Portugal. This beautiful mottled stone bears a Latin inscription on its face, including the verses “serpentum imperit tibi dominus per adam et avv (The Lord reigns over the serpents through Adam and Avv) ” and “sangea sanctis mortuum imperit tibi dominus per vivum et devotun (The blood of the saints, of the dead, commands you, Lord, through the living and the devoted).” Two crosses adorn the top of the inscribed area. A magnificent example of an ancient inscription, presented on a custom-made stand.
