Polychrome Vase From The Ca Mau Shipwreck (yongzheng Period, C. 1725)
A notable exception among the cargo of this shipwreck, which consists almost entirely of blue-and-white porcelain pieces. The decoration, in cobalt blue and iron brown-red, was painted underglaze in a very pale celadon which is quite infrequent.
Very few examples—featuring two different designs—were recovered during the excavation.
This one is intact, with only a few minor firing defects on the glaze (photos 6 and 7).
The interior has been deliberately left uncleaned, together with the base which still bears a few oyster shells attesting to its underwater origin.
Height: 21 cm. Weight: 1545 g.
The only two close pieces offered at the sale in Amsterdam in 2007 sold for 14,400 and 19,200 € (photo number eight).
