Louis XVI Period, France 18th Century Powdering Table In Cherrywood, Small Desk

Louis XVI Period Convertible Dressing / Powdering Table in Cherrywood, Forming a Small Desk, 18th Century

An 18th-century convertible dressing and powdering table, capable of serving as a small desk or entrance console. French work from the late 18th century, Louis XVI or Directoire period. The main structure is made of solid cherrywood, displaying a beautiful warm and luminous patina. The frame, drawer bottoms and rear panels are made of softwood.

Architectural yet light in line, typical of the transition toward Neoclassicism. The rectangular top consists of a solid mitred frame enclosing three panels. The front opens with four genuine stacked side drawers, using the full depth of the piece, and three simulated false drawers in the apron. The lower profile of the central apron is finely cut in a bow-shaped “arbalète” outline. Dummy central bronze key escutcheon. Round brass pull knobs, probably added at a later date. Straight base composed of four square-section legs, profiled in tapered spindle form.

A piece of convertible furniture. The central top panel has a fall-front flap mounted on iron hinges. The interior reveals an original mirror inset into the lid and held by a profiled frame. The lower storage area is compartmentalized, divided into four rectangular compartments lined with old fabric.

Very good overall state of preservation. The piece is sound and has been fully treated against wood-boring insects. Numerous traces of old wormholes. Original mirror showing significant deterioration of the silvering in the centre. The piece bears evidence of past restoration. Drawers slide perfectly.  Stable and solid structure.

Measurements:
• Width: 88 cm
• Depth: 46 cm
• Total height: 74.5 cm
• Height beneath the central apron: 51 cm
