Large Antique Louis XIV Style Cove Frame in Gilt Wood and Stucco, Deep Profile, Napoleon III Period, 19th-Century Frame for Canvas up to 62.1 x 46.8 cm

Important 19th-century frame, drawing on the architectural and ornamental codes of the Louis XIV style. Model with a very wide cove profile, featuring projecting corners and centres. It may be used either vertically or horizontally.

Assembled softwood core, with high-relief decoration executed in stucco. The surface shows an old gilding technique, allowing the red ground layer, or Armenian bole, to show through. Carefully finished with liquid regilding.

The profile is composed, from the inside outward, of: a recently added inset giltwood liner, a heart-and-dart frieze, a succession of plain mouldings, and a delicate pearl frieze. The imposing cove is decorated with large scrolling acanthus leaves. The outer edge of the frame is bordered by a frieze of laurel leaves topped with small dots, or berries. The corners are punctuated by voluminous clasping acanthus leaves. The centres of the four axes are marked by prominent crossed ribbon bows.

Very satisfactory overall state of preservation. Wear consistent with use, with a beautiful aged patina highlighting the red bole ground. Sound and homogeneous structure. Presence of discreet chips, minor shrinkage micro-cracks and very small losses inherent to the normal ageing of this type of technique. The whole remains perfectly presentable.

The giltwood liner was added at a later date and is currently fixed with nails. Numerous traces of lot numbers inscribed on the reverse in chalk and pencil, very likely indicating previous passage through an auction room.

Strong decorative potential for integration into a contemporary interior, with the possibility of conversion into a wall mirror by adding a bevelled mirror plate.
