Mid-19th Century Painting Of Saint John And Herod
Refined and unique oil painting on canvas, housed in a carved, painted, and gilded wooden frame. The painting depicts a scene from the New Testament, depicting the moment when Saint John the Baptist publicly condemns Herod Antipas for his illegitimate marriage to Herodias. The scene takes place in a palace, where we can see the architecture (depicted in the Neo-Egyptian style popular at the time) and the city outside in perspective. In the foreground on the left is Saint John, holding the cross, barefoot and dressed as a beggar, pointing to the king with his left hand. On the left is Herod, seated on a rich throne, depicted pensively, while next to him is his wife Herodias, wearing a crown, who places her hand on his arm. Among the figures, to the side, is a female figure playing the harp. The work's stylistic rendering is reminiscent of the famous painting by Giuseppe Fattori. It is a painting of great taste and refinement, capable of adding a touch of class and elegance to any space. Italian craftsmanship, from the Fattori school, mid-19th century.
