The Artist:
Georges CYR (Montreuil-sous-Bois1880 - Beirut 1964)
Georges Cyr was a major French modernist painter, whose artistic trajectory was intimately linked to Normandy before he settled permanently in Lebanon, where he would become a tutelary figure of local modern art.
One of the Masters of the Rouen School
Born in Montreuil-sous-Bois, Georges Cyr began his career in administration before devoting himself fully to his passion for painting.
He settled in Normandy, a region that would profoundly influence his work.
He quickly became one of the leading figures of the Rouen School, rubbing shoulders with renowned artists such as Robert Antoine Pinchon and Pierre Dumont.
A constantly evolving artist, Cyr quickly moved beyond pure Impressionism to explore the structures of Cubism and the chromatic vivacity of Fauvism.
His works from the Normandy period are characterized by rigorous construction, generous brushwork and a unique sensitivity to the light so particular to the Seine valley.
The Seine at Pîtres: A subject of choice
The village of Pîtres, located in the Eure department at the confluence of the Seine and Andelle rivers, was a major source of inspiration for Georges Cyr.
The surrounding chalk cliffs, the changing reflections of the river and the fluvial activity offered the painter the ideal playground to exercise his research into form and color.
His depictions of the Seine bear witness to his perfect mastery of landscape, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of Normandy with a modernity and geometric force that are his signature.
International recognition
In 1934, Georges Cyr left France for Beirut.
In Lebanon, he played a pioneering role, training the first generation of modern Lebanese artists and co-founding the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA).
Today, his works are held in prestigious public and private collections in France and the Middle East, and enjoy a sustained, international standing on the art market.
