Charles Martin-Sauvaigo (1881–1970)
Charles Martin-Sauvaigo is a major French painter, particularly famous for his landscapes and seascapes, as well as his prestigious title of Official Painter of the Navy.
Born in Nice in 1881 into a farming family in the Carras district, his talent was recognized early on by the renowned painter Félix Ziem, who strongly encouraged him.
After studying at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice under the direction of Alexis Mossa, he left for Paris. He enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under masters such as Léon Bonnat and Luc-Olivier Merson. In 1922, he was appointed Official Painter of the Navy.
This appointment marked a turning point in his career : he decorated numerous flagships of the French fleet, such as the Liberté, the Île-de-France, and the Ville d'Alger.
His travels took him to North Africa, across Africa, and throughout Europe.
His canvases captured the light of Beirut, Tangier, and Norway with a post-Impressionist sensibility.
A true pilgrim of light, he traveled throughout the French provinces to capture their unique character, immortalizing each region with a fervor that testifies to his deep attachment to the roots of France.
After a life dedicated to capturing the light of the world and the landscapes of France, Charles Martin-Sauvaigo passed away in Paris on November 9, 1970, leaving behind a radiant and eclectic body of work.
