The artist always followed his surname Lanfantwith "de Metz" to indicate his origin.
After an eventful childhood and adolescence, he settled in ParisParis around 1843. He first exhibited works on historical subjects, then genre scenes until 1868.
His master was Ary Scheffer (1795-1858), the great genre painter of the FrenchFrench Romantic School.
The latter quickly recognized Scheffer's extraordinary talent for drawing.drawing talent.
From 1843 to 1866, Lanfant de Metz successfully exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.Artists in Paris.
From this date onwards, he settled in Le Havre, where he paintedmainly small-format paintings depicting the world of carefree childhoodworld of carefree childhood, the joy of children, mischievous and quarrelsome, where the child is king.is king.
