The Artist:
Henri Paul Royer was a French painter, draughtsman and illustrator, known for his portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, particularly in Brittany and Lorraine.
Henri Paul Royer was the son of Jules Royer creator of one of Nancy's most important lithographic printing works.
Immersed in the art world, Royer entered the Nancy School of Fine Arts, where he met Émile Friant.
He exhibited his first works at the Nancy Salon.
He undertakes a study trip to the Netherlands in the company of Emile Friant
On his return in 1888 Henri Royer decides to continue his training in Paris, at the Académie Julian, where he is a pupil of Jules Lefebvre, François Flameng and Benjamin-Constant.
Henri Royer exhibits from 1890 at the Salon de la Société des artistes français. He quickly made a name for himself as a portraitist and genre painter.
His style, classical and figurative, is in the academic tradition, with great mastery of drawing and particular attention to light and color.
Royer traveled frequently, to both North and South America, as well as across Europe, Sicily, Italy, Greece and the Middle East, but also to Brittany (Audierne and Douarnenez), where he produced a large number of portraits of fishermen, peasant women and scenes of local life. He also painted landscapes in Lorraine, and during the First World War produced scenes related to the conflict.
He received numerous honors and awards, including the gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1907.
Royer taught at the Académie Julian, where he trained generations of artists, both French and foreign. His studio is renowned for the rigor and quality of its teaching of drawing and painting.
His work is marked by the precision of his drawing, the psychological depth of his portraits, and an attachment to scenes of rural or maritime life. His paintings reflect both a marked humanism and great formal elegance. He loved to paint during his various trips and stays abroad.
