Joseph Delattre, (Deville lesRouen 1858 - Le Petit-Couronne 1912)

Joseph Delattre is considered one of the founders of thefounders of the Rouen School, born in 1858 in Déville-lès-Rouen, Normandy.

The son of a modest Belgian glazier, he fled to Franceto France in 1880, he continued to work as a glazier with his father, attendingevening classes at the Rouen painting school, where he met J.L. Lemaitre, Ch.Lemaitre, Ch Angrand, Ch Fréchon, and remained close friends.

In 1886, he participated with other artists in thedesign of the book "Rouen in 1886".

He then produced manyillustrations. He forms a commitment to Impressionismand against official, traditional teaching.
In 1896, he founded the Académie Libre de Normandie, wherehe trained many of the painters of the Rouen School.
He introduced them to plein-air painting throughworkshops.He was long criticized for his method, but his studentsbut his students appreciated his approach and characterized him as the only onemocked, but the only one with a real eye.He remains one of the most important and talentedpainters of the Rouen school.
