The Work:
This is a lively composition that captures the atmosphere of a guinguette atCours-la-Reine in Rouen with great economy of line.
In the foreground, characters with sketched silhouettes are seated in a convivial atmosphere.
A luminous white tablecloth draws the eye to the center of the composition.
The mix of watercolor and gouache creates an interesting interplay of textures.
The strokes are rapid and suggestive, characteristic of Pinchon's postimpressionist approach.
Through what appears to be a glass roof or open structure, we see masses of greenerythe trees in the courtyard and the urban silhouettesof Rouen standing out against a background of tinted paper.
The Artist :
Robert Antoine Pinchon(1886-1943)
Born on July 1, 1886 in Rouen,to a family steeped in culture (his father was a librarian, journalist and close friend of Guy de Maupassant).
A major figure of post-impressionismand a prominent member of the second generation of the Rouen School.
An extremely precocious artist, he exhibited his first canvas at the age of 14. He studied at the LycéePierre-Corneille in Rouen, then at the École régionale des beaux-arts de Rouensunder the guidance of Philippe Zacharie.
Although he had no single "master" in the classical sense, he was deeply influenced by ClaudeMonet, who admired his work and described him as having an "astonishing paw at the service of a surprising eye".
He also frequented AlbertLebourg and Camille Pissarro at the home of collector François Depeaux.
His style is characterized by a bold use of pure tones and a lively touch.
He briefly explored Fauvism between 1905 and 1907, before returning to a light-focused postimpressionism.
He is above all a painter of Norman landscapes, the Seine, the port of Rouen and gardens.
His paintings are mainly conserved in institutions in Normandy, but also nationally:
- Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (the most important collection, including Le Pont aux Anglais and Effetde neige).
- Musée de Louviers (LesInondations).
- Musée d'Art Moderne AndréMalraux (MuMa) in Le Havre.
- Musée Alfred-Canel in Pont-Audemer. Musée de Draguignan (LeCoteau d'Amfreville).
