Still Life Painting , Retour De Chasse , 19th Century
This painting depicts a hunting still life, a popular genre in European painting from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
The work shows a pheasant hanging upside down in a dark interior, accompanied by hunting accessories and a rustic decor evoking an aristocratic pantry or kitchen area.
At the center of the composition appears a male pheasant with flamboyant plumage, dominated by deep russet, copper and brown tones.
His body hangs vertically, head tilted downwards, in a posture typical of post-hunt game scenes.
The long, light tail feathers and golden highlights of the plumage immediately catch the eye.
Around the bird are suspended various hunting objects:
- a gibecière or red leather bag,
- straps and lanyards,
- probably a decoy or small metal accessories,
- pieces of patinated brown leather.
In the background, we can make out a wicker cage or basket, partially covered with draped fabric in ochre and golden-brown tones.
These elements reinforce the domestic, rustic atmosphere of the scene.
The composition is built in a very dark mood, with a deep black-brown background that highlights the materials and warm colors of the pheasant.
The light, directed sideways, creates a dramatic effect typical of Baroque influences: it illuminates the plumage, leathers and fabric while leaving the rest in penumbra.
The work is in the tradition of Flemish or Dutch hunting still lifes, inspired by painters such as:
- Jan Weenix,
- Frans Snyders,
- Jean-Baptiste Oudry.
The theme of hanging game once symbolized:
- abundance,
- the social prestige associated with hunting,
- and sometimes the fragility of life (vanity dimension).
- the painting is done in oil on canvas;
- the varnish shows a slight patina and some sheen;
- the black frame with gold fillet appears later than the work but well suited to the subject;
- the frame and mounting visible on the reverse suggest early manufacture.
The ensemble exudes a warm, hushed atmosphere, highly decorative, with a strong traditional character.
The brown and gold palette, combined with the realism of the plumage and hanging objects, gives the painting a country house or old hunting dwelling charm.
