Important Marquetry Cabinet In Precious Woods. French Work, Louis XVI Period,
Important marquetry cabinet in precious woods. French work, Louis XVI period, second half of the 18th century. A remarkable cabinet veneered in precious woods, richly decorated with exquisitely fine polychrome marquetry, illustrating the refined decorative taste of the 18th century. The front and sides are adorned with marquetry panels depicting antique vases on both sides and elegant floral compositions arranged in baskets on the front, executed in various wood species carefully chosen for their natural hues. These compositions are framed by geometric fillets and friezes of neoclassical inspiration, evoking the ornamental vocabulary of Antiquity. The upper section, topped with a slightly undulating surface, opens with a series of drawers of varying sizes, originally intended for filing documents and boxes, attesting to its function as a cabinet. The lower section features a drawer and a compartment opening with a door that reveals a storage space with a shelf on either side, all secured with the same key. The piece is captivating thanks to the remarkable quality of its marquetry, the richness of its veneers, and the harmony of its proportions—qualities characteristic of Parisian production at the end of the 18th century. A cabinet that is both decorative and functional, it stands as an elegant testament to the craftsmanship of French cabinetmakers during the reign of Louis XVI. It is in very good condition, with a warm patina. It measures 120 cm high, 66 cm long, and 36 cm deep.
