Orientalist Oil On Canvas, Circa 1870, 19th Century

19th-century Orientalist oil on canvas

Young children in Ottoman costumes on a swing
Dimensions: 100 × 80 cm
Canvas re-stretched – Wooden frame with gilded stucco from the Napoleon III period

This charming, large-format oil on canvas depicts an Orientalist genre scene imbued with the poetry and freshness characteristic of the second half of the 19th century. The work depicts two young children dressed in rich, Ottoman-inspired costumes playing in a wooded landscape bathed in soft light.

At the center of the composition, a little girl sits on a swing suspended between two large, ancient trees whose sturdy branches serve as supports. She wears a traditional costume consisting of a white tunic, a striped vest in shades of ochre and green, a wide golden belt, puffy pink pants, and an elegant bonnet adorned with red flowers and a blue feather. Her delicately sculpted face, with rosy cheeks and an expressive gaze, is the focal point of the scene.

Beside her, a young boy, dressed in loose-fitting dark pants, a cream-colored jacket, and a red headdress adorned with a blue plume, sways with the motion of the swing. His tender and protective demeanor adds a particularly endearing narrative dimension. The two figures exchange a knowing glance that beautifully animates the composition.

The landscape, rendered with a soft, airy touch, offers a beautiful atmospheric depth. The tall trees with their powerful trunks harmoniously frame the scene, while the foliage, rendered in a rich palette of greens, stands out against a delicately pink sky. The diffused light creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere, typical of Orientalist paintings intended for 19th-century bourgeois interiors.

The execution reveals an experienced hand: the skin tones are finely nuanced, the fabrics display beautiful textural effects, and the costumes are rendered with a genuine attention to detail. The work as a whole evokes French or Italian Orientalist paintings influenced by travels in the eastern Mediterranean, which were very much in vogue during the Second Empire and at the beginning of the Third Republic.

The canvas has been re-stretched using traditional methods, ensuring the work’s excellent stability today. The pictorial surface displays a network of fine craquelure consistent with its age, without detracting from the overall aesthetic quality. The colors remain luminous and well-preserved.

The work is presented in its substantial, richly gilded wood and stucco frame from the Napoleon III period, adorned with large rocaille motifs, foliage, and shells in relief. This frame perfectly highlights the composition. Note an old, restored crack in the upper part of the frame, visible on the reverse but discreet when displayed.

Estimate

In the absence of an identifiable signature, but given the pictorial quality, the sought-after subject matter, its large dimensions (100 × 80 cm), and its original frame, this work can be estimated at between 1,800 and 3,000 € in an antique gallery. An attribution to a well-known Orientalist painter or the discovery of a signature upon examination could naturally affect this estimate.

This decorative composition, refined and full of charm, is a fine example of 19th-century European Orientalist painting, highly prized by collectors for its exoticism, delicate execution, and remarkable decorative appeal.
