This delicate portrait depicts Marie-Thérèse of Austria, Archduchess of the House of Habsburg, in a ceremonial portrait inspired by the official models executed by Pierre Gobert, one of the most brilliant portraitists of the court of Louis XIV and the Regency. Gobert was particularly sought after for his portraits of the princes and princesses of the royal family, characterized by their elegance, the subtlety of the skin tones, and the richness of the costumes.

The subject is depicted in a half-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, her gaze directed toward the viewer. Her youthful face, with its pearly complexion, is enlivened by delicate, rosy cheekbones, while her gray-blue eyes and finely drawn mouth convey the gentleness and dignity characteristic of early 18th-century court portraits.

The young princess is dressed in a sumptuous royal blue satin gown, lavishly embellished with rich gold embroidery executed with great finesse. The sleeves and bodice feature an elegant design of golden foliage that underscores the princely character of the costume.

A spectacular ermine, a symbol of sovereignty and purity, is draped over her shoulders. Its soft, luminous rendering contrasts harmoniously with the deep tones of the gown.

Her headdress is particularly refined: a small blue velvet cap or toque adorned with gold braid is embellished with a white feather and cabochons simulating precious stones. A discreet dangling earring completes this official portrait.

The plain brown background, deliberately understated, focuses all attention on the quality of the portrait and the brilliance of the fabrics, in keeping with the conventions of French aristocratic portraits of this period.

The work displays meticulous execution, characterized by:

This painting follows the tradition of official portraits based on works by Pierre Gobert, whose compositions were widely circulated among the great French and European aristocratic families in the early 18th century. In the absence of documentation or a signature, it is prudent to present this work as “after Pierre Gobert” rather than as an autograph work.
