Secretary Chest, Transition Period, 18th Century
An elegant Transition-period chest-desk with a drop-leaf top, crafted from precious wood veneer and adorned with rich gilded bronze hardware.
Its design, both compact and functional, combines the appearance of a three-drawer chest with that of a secretary desk that opens to reveal an interior designed for writing.
The piece features a rectangular front with three drawers, each highlighted by a frame of light-colored wood fillets and geometric panels at the corners.
The panels are adorned with a remarkable veneer of wood sheets arranged in butterfly wings and herringbone patterns, highlighting the warm tones of the mahogany and the interplay of its grain.
The front is adorned with drop handles in gilded bronze, featuring foliage and scroll motifs, accompanied by richly decorated central lock plates.
The front stiles are accented with gilt-bronze floral motifs, while the curved legs end in gilt-bronze feet decorated with foliage, characteristic of the decorative style of the Transition period.
The piece is topped with a gray marble slab veined with white, featuring a molded edge and rounded corners, providing a contrasting touch against the warmth of the wood veneer.
The drop-down panel, fitted with a lock and bronze hardware, opens to reveal an interior finished in precious wood veneer, organized into several small drawers and compartments.
The drawers feature frames with fillet detailing and small gilded bronze handles.
The central section offers open storage space, while the drawer, when pulled out, forms a writing surface covered in brown leather and edged with gilded trim. The piece as a whole reflects a thoughtful design, intended to hold correspondence, papers, and small personal items.
