Cabinet With Doors Stamped Migeon Pierre IV (1696-1758) 18th Century
Artist: Pierre Migeon Iv ( 1696-1758 )
A cabinet with doors, stamped Pierre Migeon IV (1696-1758), dating from the early 18th century. It has a serpentine front and curved sides, and is made of amaranth wood and amaranth veneer. It opens with two doors. It is topped with a breccia marble slab from Aleppo, also in a serpentine shape on the front to follow the form of the cabinet. The frame is made of softwood. Some of the bronze mounts bear the crowned C. Therefore, this cabinet can be definitively dated between 1745 and 1749. It measures 116 cm in length (112 cm at the front), 40 cm in depth, and 86 cm in height. It is in very good condition. Pierre IV Migeon (1696-1758) – cabinetmaker – Received his master's certificate around 1725: The most famous of his lineage, Pierre Migeon IV, cabinetmaker as well as merchant, distinguished himself with furniture that offered a delightful blend of tradition and modernity. Born into a family of cabinetmakers, all named Pierre, Pierre IV Migeon was the son of Pierre III Migeon and Judith Mesureur. The fourth in his line, he alone arouses the interest of collectors. Likely trained in his father's or stepfather's workshop, his activity took place in the first half of the 18th century, when the use of the maker's mark was becoming widespread. While his exact date of mastery remains uncertain, his reputation is well-established thanks to numerous signed pieces of furniture produced in his workshop on the rue de Charenton. These were delivered to a wealthy aristocratic clientele, including the Duke of Orléans, the Duchess of Rohan, the Duchess of Epernon, Marshal de Noailles, as well as several bishops and ambassadors. From the 1740s onward, he supplied works for the Crown Furniture Repository and the Menus-Plaisirs (the royal entertainment service). He enjoyed the patronage of the Marquise de Pompadour. He also had numerous clients in France and abroad. Although Migeon's profession was that of cabinetmaker, he also operated as a merchant. He collaborated with many cabinetmakers—among the most renowned of his time—such as Bircklé, Canabas, Criaerd, Jacques Dubois, Lacroix, Saunier, and Topino. The stamp of these cabinetmakers is thus often visible not far from that of the merchant.
