19th-Century Napoleon III Revolving Sheet-Music Stand and Bookcase Guéridon, Occasional Table, Musical Marquetry Decoration, Renaissance Style

Circular guéridon sheet-music stand forming a revolving bookcase, Napoleon III period, 19th century. A music-room piece in blackened wood and marquetry, standing on a tripod base, preserving in its Renaissance-style decoration of musical trophies and grotesques the scholarly and theatrical spirit of the Second Empire. Its rotating and mobile format makes it perfectly suited for use as a sofa-end table or reading table.

Structure in patinated blackened wood, typical of Second Empire production, imitating ebony. The upper top is edged with a fine gilt-brass gallery. Rich marquetry work and inlays of bone or engraved ivorine with black ink. This is not ivory.

Tripod base decorated with foliate motifs, ending in pads mounted above three directional castors.

Central cylindrical shaft with a double-tiered design, structured by fine light horizontal stringing. Rotating intermediate cross-shaped section, divided into four storage compartments. Compartments bordered by openwork galleries with finely turned blackened-wood balusters. Smooth and functional rotating mechanism.

The decoration of the top is eclectic and Neo-Renaissance in inspiration. Central decoration composed of a polylobed medallion depicting a trophy of musical instruments — lyre, lute, flutes, sheet music — surmounted by the mask of Apollo and framed by torches. Richly worked surround of leafy scrolls, grotesques, lambrequins and stylised floral motifs. Bone-inlaid stringing highlights the edges of the base and the shelves of the cruciform structure.

Very good overall state of preservation. Fine structural integrity and excellent stability. Normal signs of use to the patina of the blackened wood, revealing the original colour of the wood in places. A few old, customary restorations, invisible to the naked eye, including slight retouching to some of the white stringing on the shaft, perfectly blended into the overall patina. No major damage; marquetry complete.
