Oil On Panel, Portrait De Dame, Romanticism 19th Century Louis Philippe - French School

Oil on Panel, French School, 19th Century, circa 1840–1860 — Portrait of a Lady with Lace Bonnet — France, Louis-Philippe Period, Romantic Era

Oil on mahogany panel depicting, in bust-length and frontal view, an elderly lady seated in a Neo-Renaissance-style armchair. The sitter, her hands crossed on her lap, faces the viewer with a direct and composed gaze.

She is dressed in a dark gown cinched at the waist with a belt and buckle, adorned with white lace cuffs at the wrists and a large pleated collar falling over the shoulders, fastened at the neckline with a gilt brooch. Her head is covered with an imposing lace bonnet decorated with blue ribbons. A ring is worn on her right hand.

To the right of the composition hangs a heavy curtain with rich red and gold scrolling motifs, enlivening an otherwise dark and deep background.

The ensemble — the conservative attire of a mature lady, the Neo-Renaissance-style furniture fashionable between 1840 and 1880, and the restrained ceremonial staging — places the work within the tradition of French bourgeois portraiture of the mid-19th century, circa 1840–1860.

The execution, careful in the rendering of the flesh tones, the transparency of the lace, and the velvety quality of the fabrics, together with the intimate panel format, belongs to contemporary Parisian production, close in spirit to certain intimate English and Dutch portraits of the same period.

Mahogany panel, painted directly in oil. The reverse bears the oval ink stamp “Panneaux Flamands – Place Vendôme”, the mark of a Parisian manufacturer and dealer of panels for oil painting active in the 19th century, located in the district of colour merchants and artists’ suppliers. The reverse also retains paper residues from former backing mounts.

Rectangular frame in gilt wood and stucco with an old patina, rounded profile, Neo-Rocaille style, 19th century. Rich ornamentation: guilloché inner frieze, spandrels and raised cartouches decorated with shells, leafy clasps, and floral bouquets. The frame shows age-related wear: a network of cracks in the gilding, losses to the stucco at the corners, and rubbing on the projecting areas.

Condition:
The paint layer appears to be in satisfactory condition, with no major visible lifting, and displays wear and patina consistent with its age. An impression mark from the frame is visible on the paint layer along the edge, perceptible only when the panel is removed from its frame.

Provenance:
Possible link to the French painter and illustrator Héloïse Colin (1819–1873). The work comes from a group containing works by Héloïse Colin with the same type of annotations on the reverse. This provenance association is mentioned for historical context only and does not constitute an attribution proposal.
