Large Wood And Gilded Stucco Frame 19th Century Regency Style For Stretcher 67.4 X48.5 Cm
Large Antique Gilt Wood and Stucco Frame, Napoleon III Period, Régence Style, 19th-Century Frame for Canvas up to 67.4 cm x 48.5 cm
Large 19th-century Napoleon III frame in gilt wood and stucco, with harmonious proportions and ornamental decoration — acanthus leaves, shells and small flowers — boldly revisiting the Régence-Louis XIV vocabulary. Its particularly deep profile gives the whole piece a substantial, opulent and theatrical presence, while preserving the interplay of matte and glossy surfaces characteristic of antique gilding. This frame can accommodate a canvas or be converted into a mirror. It may be used either vertically or horizontally.
Traditional construction on a fir-wood stretcher frame, visible on the reverse. The decorations, in strong relief, are executed in stucco. The surface shows an old gilding technique, allowing the red bole ground layer to show through in places. It has been carefully covered with a liquid regilding.
Very finely executed recutting and chasing work. Presence of stippled matte grounds, known as “amatis”, a technique inspired by bronze chasing, creating a strong and elegant contrast between the textured matte areas and the glossy raised ornament.
Rich and structured ornamentation. Integrated gilt inner liner, or marie-louise, forming the inner border. Intermediate frieze rhythmically decorated with alternating shells and acanthus leaves. Wide smooth central hollow framed by mouldings. Richly sculpted outer border, decorated with small flowers and large scrolling acanthus leaves.
Very satisfactory state of preservation. Homogeneous piece, perfectly presentable. Signs of wear and patina consistent with age and use. Presence of very discreet small chips, surface micro-cracks and tiny losses to the stucco material in places, without affecting the overall aesthetic appearance.
Strong decorative potential for integration into a contemporary interior, with the possibility of converting it into a wall mirror by adding mirror glass.
Measurements:
• Outer dimensions of the frame: 95 x 76.5 cm
• Depth / frame thickness: 8 cm
• Maximum canvas size accepted: 67.4 cm x 48.5 cm
• Inner liner overlap / margin: 15 mm on each side
• Sight size: 64 x 45 cm
The maximum canvas dimensions, 67.4 cm x 48.5 cm, minus the inner liner overlap of 2 x 15 mm, do not correspond exactly to the sight size of 64 x 45 cm, as a small safety margin has been allowed for and takes into account the natural irregularities of the wood.
