John Dabour was born in 1837 in Smyrna (present-day Izmir, Turkey). He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then in the studio of the painter Philippe-Auguste Jeanron. He then established himself in Baltimore as a portrait painter before settling in New York for the rest of his career. Dabour notably painted important figures such as General Robert E. Lee and General William T. Sherman, and exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1878, 1879, 1882, and 1892.
