From 1938 to 1974, he had 53 solo exhibitions, exhibited regularly at the Durand-Ruel and Carré galleries in Paris, and was a member of the jury of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the Adamo Galleria in New York from 1968, and his American agent introduced him to the American market from 1979. He died in February 1999, a few days before the inauguration of a major retrospective at the Musée National de la Marine in the Palais de Chaillot.
This painting was done in 1986, when Rigaud was 74, at the peak of his career. It depicts the port of Erquy (Côtes-d'Armor), a typical subject for an artist who devoted his life to the harbors and shores of the Atlantic.
