Eugène Galien Laloue (1854–1941), Who Signed His Work Under The Pseudonym L. Dupuy

Oil on Panel — Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), signed under the pseudonym L. Dupuy■ An antique painting signed "Dupuy" lower right, a well-documented pseudonym of Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), a French painter renowned for his lively Belle Époque urban scenes. Like many artists bound by exclusive dealer contracts, Galien-Laloue signed part of his output under assumed names, with "L. Dupuy" being one of the best-known and most frequently encountered at public auction.■ A pupil of landscape painter Léon Germain Pelouse (Barbizon School), Galien-Laloue exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1877 onwards. His works are held today in the collections of several French museums, notably the museums of La Rochelle and Mulhouse, as well as the Galerie Roussel of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Louviers.■ An animated scene depicting an old street with a fortified gate, figures in period dress crossing the cobbled roadway. A composition typical of the artist's style: careful architectural perspective, lively staffage figures, finely rendered natural light.■ Signed "Dupuy" lower right.■ Presented in a mahogany-toned wood frame with moulding and inner fillet.■Artwork dimensions: 33 x 24 cm.Dimensions with frame: 53 x 44 cm.■ Condition consistent with age — please refer to the photographs for further assessment.
