Jean Marec (1901 - 1972) - Fair Day In Brittany
Oil on canvas
46 × 38 cm (63 × 55 cm with gilt frame)
Signed lower left
A Breton painter, Jean Marec was a member of the Association of Painters of Quimper Cornouaille. He devoted his work to rural and popular scenes of Brittany — fairs, pardons, coastal landscapes — and his paintings are today considered faithful records of the traditions and way of life of a vanished Brittany. His works appear regularly at public auctions, notably at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris.
A view of a livestock fair in a Breton village. Dense crowd in the foreground, cattle, peasants in traditional dress, church spire in the background. Broad flat brushwork, strong and contrasted light. Very good condition. Presented in a very fine gilt moulded frame.
