Louis-adolphe Tessier (1858–1915) "elegant Lady In A Ball Gown"
Artist: Louis Adolphe Tessier
Watercolour on paper — 1893
44 × 34 cm (65 × 55 cm with gilt frame)
Signed and dated lower left
Presented under glass with mount
A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Louis-Adolphe Tessier was admitted as early as 1882 to the Salon des Artistes français in Paris — the official annual fine arts exhibition and the ultimate reference for any painter of the era. He competed for the Prix de Rome in 1884, became a full member of the Salon in 1905, and was awarded a gold medal in 1909 for his painting Soir de fête. He established himself as one of the most refined watercolourists of his generation in the field of genre scenes and feminine representations of the Belle Époque.
This 1893 watercolour depicts a young woman adjusting her shoe before a ball, dressed in a full-skirted evening gown. The mastery of transparency characteristic of watercolour, the precision of the furniture and the delicacy of the interior light all bear witness to the skill of an artist at the height of his powers.
Condition: generally good, slight oxidation of the paper with no impact on the quality of the work.
