Belgian painter born in Tongeren in 1881, Max Chotiau is associated with the Liège School, whose figurative tradition he embodies. His wide-ranging work encompasses portraits, nudes, still lifes and landscapes. Listed in the Bénézit, his work has been offered at numerous international auctions, notably at Ader in Paris and Aguttes.
This painting depicts Nicklausse, a character from Offenbach's fantasy opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann, portrayed as a young brunette woman with a colorful scarf. The title and literary reference are inscribed in the artist's hand on the work, testifying to a sensitivity to the operatic repertoire.
