● Francis Garat was a French painter and watercolorist born in Bordeaux in 1853. He settled in Paris and worked there for most of his career. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was one of the watercolorists who depicted Parisian life during the Belle Époque.
● Garat exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1898, eventually becoming a member, as well as at the Salon de Bordeaux; a large-format watercolor, “Le Pont Neuf in Paris,” was featured at the 1905 Bordeaux Exhibition.
● His work, primarily in watercolor and sometimes enhanced with pencil, focuses on lively Parisian urban scenes—boulevards, the banks of the Seine, markets, theater goers, nightlife in cafés—rendered with an atmospheric rather than topographical sensibility, in the vein of contemporaries such as Galien-Laloue and Édouard Cortès, with whom critics recognize an obvious stylistic kinship.
