■ Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) – Bronze Wall Plaque Titled “hunting In The Middle Ages, Circa 1340”

■ Rectangular bronze wall plaque with a green patina, decorated in relief with a neo-medieval-style hunting scene. On the left, a horseman blows a horn in front of a castle whose battlements are adorned with figures. In the center, four horsemen, accompanied by a servant and a pack of hounds, are pursuing a stag. On the right, the stag is cornered in the water. The design is highly detailed: foliage, birds, dogs, and horse tack.
■ The outer rim bears a Latin inscription in Gothic script, set against a beaded border. It is read by following the frame, starting at the top:
“Sic inter dumos pregrandi corpore ceruos expediunt validis quoque sic hastilia dextris in pecus exorquent dumeta per auia acuto dum procul hinnitu sonat omnis campus equorum. ”

■ Proposed translation: “Thus, among the thickets, they drive out the stately stags; with their valiant right hands, they hurl spears at the beast through the pathless thickets, while in the distance, with a shrill neigh, the entire plain resounds with the sound of horses. ” The text corresponds to the scene depicted.
■ On the reverse, a hammered green patina, engraved in relief with “Medieval Hunt circa 1340” and signed “M. Le Verrier.” Two rings with wire allow for hanging.
■ To the best of our knowledge, this large format (48 × 17.5 cm) is very rare. There is a small trinket dish featuring the same motifs, measuring 26 × 9 cm.
■ Max Le Verrier, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine on January 29, 1891, and died in Paris on June 6, 1973, was a French sculptor and foundryman who trained at the Geneva School of Fine Arts. He opened his Paris studio in 1919 and received a medal at the 1925 International Exposition. He is best known for his Art Deco sculptures and decorative objects. His foundry also cast works by other sculptors, including Pierre Le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine.
