Antique Painting, Sailboats Leaving Bruges - Oil On Canvas - Belgium, 19th Century, Jongkind
Oil on Canvas Depicting a Lively View at the Exit of Bruges, Inscribed Lower Edge “Sortie de Bruges”. 19th-Century Painting, Jongking, Bruges 1883
Work signed and dated lower right: Jongking 1883. As of current research, the signature has not been linked to Johan Barthold Jongkind. A 19th-century work, to be considered as the work of an unidentified artist.
Oil on canvas depicting a marine scene located at the exit of Bruges, probably near a canal, basin or harbour area.
The composition is structured around several sailing boats, whose masts create a vertical rhythm across the space. Dark hulls, furled sails and secondary boats animate the water, within the atmosphere of an active yet peaceful port.
In the foreground, several figures bring a note of everyday life. The man smoking a pipe, rendered with care, gives the scene a familiar and almost documentary character, between the world of boatmen, the shoreline and harbour activity.
The brushwork, fine and restrained, appears relatively smooth, without pronounced impasto. The treatment favours the clarity of forms, the construction of spatial planes and the overall atmosphere. Muted, naturalistic palette, characteristic of northern port scenes of the late 19th century.
The work belongs as much to the maritime genre scene as to the topographical view, with Bruges evoked as a place of passage, labour and waiting.
Canvas mounted on a mahogany stretcher. Gilt frame.
Marks and numbers on the reverse, suggesting former passages through collections, exhibitions or sales, without accompanying documentation.
Very good overall condition. Stable craquelure network. White mark at the lower right, to the left of the signature.
