Eugène Louis Gillot - Storm On The Saint-valéry-en-caux Lighthouse - Gouache - Signed
Artist: Gillot Eugène Louis (1867 – 1925, France)
Eugène Louis GILLOT (1867 - 1925, France)
Storm on the lighthouse of Saint-Valéry-En-Caux
Gouache
23 × 13 cm on view - 43 × 35 cm with frame
Signed lower right E. Louis Gillot, in watercolor
Location St Valéry en Caux added in pencil
Solid wood frame with inclusion
Very good condition.
On the wave-beaten jetty, silhouettes bent by the squall advance toward the harbor light: men in oilskins, women in dark skirts, curious onlookers drawn in spite of themselves by the violence of the sea. To the left, the Saint-Valéry-en-Caux lighthouse stands out in the cold white light, while to the right, the horizon is lost in foam and mist, with two ships struggling against the swell.
The gouache, heightened with quick strokes of white to render the frothy crests, reveals Gillot's mastery of movement and atmosphere. Closer to the great English watercolorists and Turner's fulgurances than to French Impressionist analysis, Gillot excels in fixing in a seemingly free composition the essential points that give it its order.
The work is in an excellent state of freshness, with no fading or foxing. Solid wood frame with light-colored inlay.
The artist
First a wood engraver, Gillot turned to painting in 1893 after meeting Baron Dart, whose adopted son he became and who provided him with a Paris studio. On the banks of the Seine and in the ports, he captured the crowds, the play of sunlight in the mist, and the hustle and bustle of the ports of call.
Frequent stays in England - where he was received at Court in 1913 - led him to assimilate the British watercolor tradition and the lasting influence of Turner's mists. Mobilized in the Navy during the First World War, he was a member of an official mission to the United States in 1918, returning in 1923. On his return, with the support of Minister Georges Leygues, he founded the Salon des peintres de la mer and the Société nationale des beaux-arts de la mer, and was appointed official Painter of the Navy in 1921.
His works are kept at the Carnavalet Museum and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
