In a muted-toned twilight landscape, three figures stand out against a background of dark foliage crossed by a blazing sky. On the left, a standing female figure, clad in a diaphanous veil, raises her arm in a gesture of apparition or invocation. In the foreground, a half-draped bather, seen from behind, leans towards a naked putto who advances towards her in a childlike élan: this is Eros, mischievous and carnal. The reddish, diffused light emanates from the background as if from a distant fire, shaping the flesh in vigorous, melting strokes, in a spirit of fête galante tinged with Romantic realism.
The composition, in an intimate format, reveals Rosalbin de Buncey's ease in treating the mythological figure inserted into a lyrical landscape. The palette - deep browns, woody greens, sunset carmine - lends the whole a dreamy, velvety atmosphere, characteristic of the painter.
Frame: fine period gilded wood frame, with wide border of laurel leaves in relief, good condition, reinforced on the back with a wood veneer.
