Let's start by pointing out that this piece is actually a Cuval, in other words an old cereal pouch. It has simply been dismantled to create a flat surface ideal for floor or wall hanging.
The art of weaving in the late 19th century is expressed in this refined piece belonging to the large family of everyday objects once used by the nomadic populations of Eastern Anatolia. Imagine the nomadic way of life and understand that each Cuval had to be identifiable and unmistakably attributed to its owner. Thus, each object was personalized by a selection of motifs, composition and hues. A signature.
I'm often asked about a piece's dating clues. Here they are, in order of importance: hue, texture, pattern. Each of these elements is associated with a period. Even if this remains an estimate, the process is sufficiently precise. We can then divide a century into 4 quarters. In relation to the above characteristics, this Cuval falls into the late 19th century. Its dense, saturated, all-plant hues are as deep as they are luminous. We speak of purity. This visual and aesthetic aspect is achieved through long and complex processes that fix the colors permanently inside the wool fibers. Wool-on-wool weaving is extremely fine. Other qualities, such as precision and regularity, give it a supple, light appearance. The composition is a succession of horizontal bands, finished at each end by a band with embroidered motifs on the surface.
These are all the elements that enable us to classify this piece as a Cuval from Malatya in southeastern Anatolia. Furthermore, the piece is precisely referenced in specialized literature.
