The work depicts the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo (Hohe Gaisl) as seen from the valley floor near the village of Carbonin, at the point where the path to the Prato Piazza plateau begins. The composition is structured around a rigorous arrangement of perspective planes: in the foreground, the stony riverbed and low vegetation introduce a diagonal line that guides the eye toward the central mass of the Dolomite range.
The style of Paul Schuler, an Austrian painter active in the first half of the 20th century, is distinguished by a textural and analytical application of paint. On the rocky walls, color is applied with dense brushstrokes that convey the structural complexity of the dolomite, accentuated by the contrast between the sunlit areas and the shadowed gullies where snow deposits linger. The color palette plays on the balance between the greens of the conifers and the variations of gray and blue that define the mountain’s volumes. The diffused light of the sky, dotted with cloud formations, lends the entire scene an atmospheric clarity typical of the midday hours at high altitudes. The work bears the signature “Paul Schuler” in the lower left corner, while on the reverse there is an autograph inscription on the stretcher (Hohe Gaisl).
