20th-Century Oil Painting – Sunset on the Snow
Oil painting on cardboard depicting a snowy landscape at sunset, with alpine chalets and snow-laden fir trees, characterized by a warm and luminous atmosphere.
Technical details:
Period: early 20th century
Origin: Germany
Artist: Josef Kuttner
Technique: oil on cardboard
Artwork dimensions: 63 × 87 cm (24.8 × 34.25 in)
Dimensions with frame: 79 × 103 cm (31.1 × 40.55 in)
Description:
Oil painting on cardboard depicting a snowy mountain landscape at sunset. In the foreground, on the right side of the composition, several fir trees laden with snow are visible; their bent crowns emphasize the weight of the snow cover and introduce a vertical element that balances the wide openness of the background landscape.
The central area of the painting is occupied by a group of chalets with steeply pitched roofs, also covered in snow. The buildings, gathered into a small cluster, appear nestled in a valley, with a faint trace of smoke indicating human presence. The light-colored surfaces of the snow reflect the sunset light, taking on orange, pink, and violet hues.
In the background, a succession of mountain ridges unfolds, rendered through soft tonal areas and layered colors that gradually fade toward the horizon. The sky, broad and dominant, shows a diffuse sunset, with brushstrokes suggesting a low, glowing light beyond the mountain line.
The painting is set in a wide gilded frame, decorated with an incised pattern of small lozenges. The artist’s signature is visible on the front, in the lower right corner. Also available with an antique fir wood frame measuring 7 cm (2.76 in).
