Description:

Painting from the first half of the twentieth century, depicting the Latemar massif with Carezza Lake in the foreground.
The composition unfolds horizontally, with a clear organization of spatial planes: the body of water in the lower section, the intermediate band of woodland, and the Dolomite rock faces in the background.

From a technical and execution standpoint, the work displays an interesting alternation of tools and painterly approaches.
The rocky area of the Latemar is executed predominantly with a palette knife, using dense, layered applications of paint that construct the surfaces through planes and fractures. The use of the palette knife creates pronounced textural reliefs and sharp edges, particularly effective in conveying the rugged and monumental geological structure of the Dolomite walls, enhancing the perception of light breaking across their irregular surfaces.

The remainder of the painting—sky, lake, forests, and foreground—is instead rendered with a brush, using a more controlled and modulated application. Here the brushwork alternates between smooth and vibrant, yet remains consistently softer than the material density of the rocks, allowing for gradual tonal transitions and a convincing atmospheric effect. In the lake, the paint handling is fluid and synthetic, aimed at suggesting reflections and depth without excessive descriptive detail; in the forests, the brushstrokes follow a vertical, broken rhythm that alludes to vegetation without defining it analytically.

The chromatic palette aligns with the landscape sensibility of the period: warm greens and browns for the vegetation, muted blues and turquoises for the water, luminous yet never glaring skies, and a range of pinkish grays, violets, and light earth tones for the rocks, enhanced by the palette-knife texture.

Spatial depth is constructed through the overlapping of planes and the progressive chromatic attenuation, while the lake serves as a compositional anchor and a visual pause.
