British Crimean War 1854 Pattern Canteen

A British, Crimean War period 1854 pattern canteen. Constructed from wood that is held together with two iron bands and three bars, two of which would have originally supported the shoulder strap. The owner has carved his initials to one side "J.C", and to the other is broad arrow and Board of Ordnance mark showing a date of "1854". Originally the canteen would have been painted blue but evidently appears to have been re-issued and painted a reddish colour with traces of blue beneath. The wooden stopper is absent and has been replaced with a cork stopper. Measuring Approximately 7 inches wide. One shrinkage split to one side of the canteen, but overall good condition.

Note -

The British Army 1854 pattern canteen was later replaced by the 1862 pattern.
