Miniature Animated Landscape Box And Monstrance Restoration Period
This beautiful round box is made of brown tortoiseshell. The lid is adorned with a highly detailed miniature, painted on very fine canvas, depicting a wooded landscape with distant perspective and animated with characters.
The miniature is encircled by brass and protected by curved glass.
The back of the box is adorned with a crucifix monstrance with rays of light and clouds on an ornamented base, framed by laurel garlands. All around, a frieze of angels' heads. The decoration is finely executed in hot-pressed tortoiseshell.
Fits perfectly. Shell in perfect condition.
The miniature is missing and chipped under the glass, but this does not affect the legibility of the scene.
VERY GOOD CONDITION, Restoration period circa 1815.
