Early 18th-century Silver And Rock Crystal ‘monstrance’ Scent Bottle
A rare, early 18th-century, circa 1720, South German/Bavarian, silver and rock crystal scent bottle in the form of a monstrance, richly embellished with caryatids, winged figures, mythical creatures, and lions for feet, the finial of a man (Hercules?) fighting a lion, with large rock crystal cabochons front and back, and a faceted rock crystal stem and foot. 12 cm high.
Looking through the rock crystal cabochons reveals whatever is behind the bottle as miniaturised and upside-down.
Condition: Missing stopper. Silver tarnished (could be cleaned with some silver dip if desired), a small chip to the faceted stem, Misaligned feet (the silver foot has two separate components, one with a silver collar around the stem, with arches/buttresses that are intended to sit on the back of the heads of the lions of the other part, but have slipped, giving the bottle a slight tilt. This could be corrected by loosening the square nut under the base, repositioning the arches and then retightening the nut, which would be a fiddly and delicate task, best carried out by a jeweller.)
